Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a member of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily of the Herpesviridae family. HSV is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects a variety of host tissues and is characterized by a lytic and latent cycle. As the first human herpesvirus to be discovered, HSV is one of the most extensively studied viruses(1). Not only have these studies shed light on basic viral processes but HSV has often served as a probe for investigating fundamental cellular processes as well. In this article, we will describe the overall structure of the virion, the viral life cycle, including productive and latent infection and reactivation, viral conquest of host cell processes, and finally epidemiology and clinical manifestations of HSV infection.(2)
