Gora by Rabindranath Tagore is one of the most significant novels in Indian English literature that explores the complex nature of identity in colonial India. The novel examines the intersections of personal identity, religious identity, cultural identity, and national identity through the life and transformation of the protagonist, Gora. Initially, Gora strongly believes in orthodox Hinduism and considers it the foundation of Indian nationalism. However, the discovery of his Irish origin completely transforms his understanding of self, religion, and nationhood. Through this identity crisis, Tagore challenges rigid social structures based on caste, religion, and birth.
The novel also reflects the ideological conflict between traditional Hindu orthodoxy and the reformist ideals of the Brahmo Samaj. Tagore presents identity not as a fixed social construct but as an evolving process shaped by self-realization and human values. The female characters in the novel further contribute to this discourse by questioning patriarchal and social limitations. Ultimately, Gora promotes a universal humanistic vision that transcends divisions of religion, caste, and nationality. This paper critically analyses how Tagore uses the theme of identity to advocate tolerance, inclusiveness, and humanity in a culturally divided society.
