Rumen bypass protein (RBP), also known as rumen undegradable protein, is an important nutritional approach used to enhance protein efficiency in ruminants such as cattle, buffaloes, and goats. In these animals, a large portion of dietary protein is broken down in the rumen, which can lead to nitrogen loss and reduced availability of essential amino acids. RBP avoids this excessive degradation and is instead digested in the small intestine, allowing a more direct and efficient supply of amino acids for production and metabolic functions.
This paper focuses on the role of RBP in improving milk production, enhancing milk protein content, supporting growth, and promoting reproductive performance in dairy animals. It also highlights improvements in feed efficiency and reduced nitrogen excretion, contributing to more sustainable livestock systems. In goats, RBP plays a significant role in improving growth rate, immunity, and overall productivity, especially under limited feeding conditions.
In contrast, the concept is not relevant for non-ruminants such as the Yorkshire pig, where protein digestion occurs through enzymatic processes rather than microbial fermentation. Therefore, balanced amino acid nutrition is more critical in such species. Overall, RBP is a valuable strategy for optimizing productivity and sustainability in ruminant nutrition.
