Abstract: Close to half Kenyan employers are dissatisfied with the level of skills of the graduates being churned out of Kenyan universities every year. This study sought to establish the effect that curriculum content has on the employability competency of the graduates produced by higher education institutions in Nairobi City of Kenya. The researcher utilized concurrent triangulation research design, a mixed method that provided for use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. A total of 379 fourth year students were randomly selected through stratified sampling from universities located within Nairobi County. Quantitative data was collected from fourth year students in their final semester of study in 15 universities in Nairobi City County and qualitative data collected from 30 curriculum developers and 25 potential employers in the labor market. At least 60.2% of the learners were satisfied with the curriculum content of the courses they had enrolled for, leaving out close to 40%. The study recommends restructuring of university undergraduate curricula, enhancing the vocational role of university courses, and introduction of work integrated learning and apprenticeship programs for learners.
Keywords: Employability, employability competency, cognitive apprenticeship, situated learning, work integrated learning
