Abstract
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is codified in Target 4.7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is critical for achieving the 2030 Agenda. Concurrently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping educational practice through adaptive learning, natural language generation, and data modeling. This paper investigates the intersection of AI and SDG pedagogy. Using a systematic review of 42 peer-reviewed studies (2019–2025) and 12 field cases across five countries, we identify four primary AI affordances for SDG education: personalized learning, complex-systems simulation, multilingual content generation, and data-literacy scaffolding. Quantitative synthesis shows average gains of 27% in SDG knowledge retention when AI tools are integrated versus traditional instruction, but with significant variance by infrastructure and teacher training. We propose the TRAIL framework—Transparent, Relevant, Actionable, Inclusive, Low-impact—to guide responsible deployment. Key risks include algorithmic bias, digital inequity, and carbon cost of large models. The paper concludes that AI is not a pedagogical panacea but, when aligned with ESD principles, can scale critical sustainability competencies globally.
