| Abstract: | Body image is a multifaceted concept that encompasses an individual’s perception, thoughts, and feelings about their own body. It is influenced by cultural ideals, media portrayals, societal expectations, and interpersonal relationships. This paper explores the sociological dimensions of body image, emphasizing how societal structures and media representations shape individual perceptions of beauty and self-worth. The study distinguishes between positive and negative body image, analyzing their effects on mental health, social relationships, and societal behavior. It further discusses the growing relevance of the body positivity movement, which promotes acceptance, inclusivity, and diversity. Using a quantitative research approach, data were collected from 25 participants in Bangalore through a structured questionnaire to assess societal perceptions and self-evaluations linked to body image. Findings reveal that societal norms and media influence significantly impact self-esteem, confidence, and social adjustment, particularly among young adults. The paper concludes that fostering body positivity, promoting media literacy, and integrating inclusive social practices are essential steps toward a more accepting and equitable society. |
