Abstract: Feather waste, a major byproduct of the poultry industry, is primarily composed of keratin, a fibrous protein rich in nitrogen (~15%), making it a potential organic amendment for soil. The decomposition and incorporation of feather waste can significantly influence the physicochemical properties of soil, enhancing its fertility and overall health. The addition of feather-derived nitrogen improves soil nitrogen availability, promoting better microbial activity and crop productivity. However, the rate of decomposition depends on factors such as microbial community composition, temperature, moisture, and soil pH. Comprehensive soil testing for nitrogen is essential to determine the bioavailability of this nutrient and to prevent over-application, which may lead to nutrient imbalance or leaching losses. Key physicochemical parameters influenced by feather waste include pH, alkalinity, acidity and water holding capacity. Monitoring these parameters helps in evaluating the extent of soil improvement and environmental sustainability of feather waste utilization. Therefore, feather waste recycling represents a cost-effective and eco-friendly strategy for soil fertility enhancement, while reducing environmental pollution associated with improper disposal of poultry byproducts.
