The paper titled “Visualising Resistance: Gender, Power, and the Politics of Representation in Select Malayalam Films” critically examines the representation of patriarchy and dominant ideologies in 22 Female Kottayam (2012), Biriyani (2020), and The Great Indian Kitchen (2021). Based on influential paradigms of feminist film theory, the study employs Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze, Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, and Luce Irigaray’s deconstruction of phallocentrism to examine how women characters are objectified as “objects of desire” and denied subjectivity. The paper also draws on Helene Cixous’s ‘ecriture feminine’ to examine how women’s bodies and experiences become sites of resistance, protest, and authorship. In addition, the research references Simone de Beauvoir’s theory of gender as socially constructed, John Berger’s visual representation theories, and Wollstonecraft’s female agency. Based on these films, the paper highlights the shift from female protagonists to empowered protagonists who reverse patriarchal roles allocated to them. It signifies how Malayalam new wave cinema subverts gender norms and calls for inclusive representation that authenticates women’s lived experiences, bodily control, and resistance. The paper concludes by arguing the political necessity of feminist narratives in rewriting dominant cinematic discourses.
