Abstract: The story of Laila and Majnu holds great importane not only in Punjabi folklore, but also in other parts of Asia, extending from the middle-east to the far-east. The story has been termed as the “Romeo & Juliet of the East”. Folklore also includes the passing down of different versions from one generation to the next or from one place to another. Folklore is not often something that can be learned through formal education or study in the fine arts. Instead, these customs are unofficially passed down from person to person through verbal teaching or example. In this article, I shall explore the origin of the story of Laila and Majnu. Furthermore, I shall also look at the different versions of the story with the importance of its aspects in Punjabi culture; and thereby its spread within the Indian sub-continent. We shall explore the following versions of the story – (i) the Arabic version of Qays and Layla; (ii) the Persian version of Layli and Majnun by Nizami Ganjavi; (iii) the Turkish version of Leylii and Majnun; (iv) the Azerbaijani version of Leylî and Mecnûn; and finally, (v) the Punjabi version of Laila and Majnu. We will be exploring the Punjabi version of Laila-Majnu at length with various details which make it more identifiable than other versions. Furthermore, we will also study how the Punjabi version has affected Punjabiyat and some basic and inherent qualities of the people of Punjab which may have given the story the shape it has today. Finally, the paper shall contain details of how the story of Laila and Majnu is portrayed in the current scenario of literature, art, music and film as well as its place in present-day theatre and cinema. For generations the story of Laila and Majnu has inspired lovers throughout the world. This paper is a deep dive into how the story has progressed and how society has evolved with it.
