The story of Laila and Majnu holds great importane not only in Punjabi folklore, but also in other parts of Asia, extending from the middle-east to the far-east. The story has been termed as the “Romeo & Juliet of the East”.
Folklore also includes the passing down of different versions from one generation to the next or from one place to another.
