Abstract
The Maratha Empire, one of the most formidable powers in Indian history, holds a unique place in the study of valour, strategy, and craftsmanship. This research, titled Steel & Strategy: The Maratha Valor - A Case Study on Arms and Armor, delves into the significance of Maratha arms and armour as an integral part of their military success and cultural identity. The study aims to contextualize the contribution of Maratha warfare to history and museological practices, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between martial heritage and its preservation in modern museums.
The Marathas demonstrated unparalleled mastery in adopting and modifying weapons suited to the diverse terrains of the Deccan Plateau and beyond. Their weapons, such as the Bhala (spear), Dand Patta (gauntlet sword), and Talwar (curved sword), were not only instruments of war but also embodied their cultural ethos and technological ingenuity. This research examines the evolution of these weapons, emphasizing the blending of indigenous techniques with foreign influences, a testament to their adaptive strategies in military and metallurgical advancements.
From a museological perspective, the project underscores the importance of conserving and presenting these artifacts within museum spaces. Through a case study approach, the research explores the role of interactive displays, digital reconstructions, and contextual storytelling in enhancing public engagement with Maratha history. It also addresses challenges like the ethical dilemmas of ownership, colonial legacies, and the technical aspects of preserving historical arms.
By bridging the domains of history, archaeology, and museology, this study aspires to provide a comprehensive narrative on the Maratha Empire’s contributions to military history and their enduring legacy in the cultural and academic domains. It advocates for an integrated approach to documenting, conserving, and disseminating knowledge about Maratha arms and armour, fostering a deeper appreciation of their strategic acumen and artistic prowess.
