Abstract: Writing is quintessentially an act of recollection that reflects the acquisition of occurrences and responses in an individual to the vivid experiences in one's life. Travelling is undoubtedly the best way through which a person gets hold of novel experiences and unfamiliar situations. Each travel is liberating in the sense that it discovers an unaddressed self of ourselves. William Styron's Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness (1990) narrates his experiences of dealing with depression. Though he pays a visit to Paris for the festive occasion of accepting a prestigious award, he is not yet delighted. Styron recognises his inception of depression while on a trip to Paris, which he makes after a gap of thirty-five years. The trip enables Styron to pay attention to the mounting anxieties and blues that he has been ignoring and repressing till the moment. He also retrospects on the famous litterateurs and philosophers who shared the plight of depression in their stages of life. This paper attempts to read the memories of his Paris trip entwined with his encountering of depression that lurked behind him and was latent until then. His experience in Paris impelled him to chronicle them through the memoir. The paper investigates the role of travel and the significance of recollection of memories in William Styron's memoir, for not just facilitating a spatial universe in the narrative but for being an active agent in his self-discovery.
