TITLE OF THE STUDY: EFFICACY OF STRETCHING AND STRENGTHENING EXERCISES WITH AND WITHOUT ELECTROTHERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME – A COMPARATIVE STUDY
OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of stretching and strengthening exercises with and without electrotherapy in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. 30 patients according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected.
METHODOLOGY:
30 patients were assigned into 2 groups by random allocation. Group- A (STRETCHINS AND STRENGTHENING EXERCISES) consists of 15 patients. Group –B (STRETCHING AND STRENGTHENING EXERCISES WITH ULTRASOUND) consists of 15 patients. Prior to the starting of the intervention program pre assessment was done by using outcome measures of VAS,SPADI and ROM of shoulder FLEXION, ABDUCTION and EXTERNAL ROTATION for both groups.
PROCEDURE:
Intervention program for 4 weeks in which Group- A received stretching and strengthening exercises and Group-B received stretching and strengthening exercises with ultrasound. After the 4 weeks intervention post –test assessment was taken by using outcome measures of VAS, SPADI and ROM–flexion, abduction and external rotation.
RESULTS:
Statistical analysis of the data showed both the groups A and B showed significant differences from pre to post intervention. But on comparing mean values of Group A and Group B, Group B (stretching and strengthening exercises with ultrasound) showed more improvement than Group A (stretching and strengthening exercises).
CONCLUSION:
The findings suggest that the stretching and strengthening exercises with ultrasound is more effective in reducing pain and improving range of motion and functional ability in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome.
