Oral mucous membrane pigmentation refers to both normal and pathological discolouration. The causes of pigmentation are multifaceted. The majority of pigmentation is physiologic, however occasionally it might be a sign of serious disorders. Oral tissues' abnormal melanin pigmentation and colour changes may be important diagnostic indicators of both local and systemic illness.
The current literature is reviewed, along with the differential diagnostic, clinical, etiological, and histological characteristics of pigmentation.
