The harem was a separate place for royal women to live. It is mentioned in contemporary sources from ancient times. Harem is an Arabic word meaning "hidden place". In Persian language, the word Zanana, Mahalshara in Hindi and Antapura in Sanskrit have been used for this place. Abul Fazal used the word "Sabisthan-e-Iqbal" for this in his book "Ain Akbari".
