Abstract: Uranium is a radioactive element that also naturally exists. Higher levels of Uranium in the environment can be hazardous both chemically and radiologically. During the pre-and post-monsoon seasons in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, 42 water samples were collected from drinking/groundwater sources and evaluated for uranium concentration using an L.E.D Fluorimeter (Quantalase manufacture) in different locations of four corridors. The distribution of Uranium was measured; thus, the optimum ingestion dose was calculated. Uranium concentrations ranged from 0.6 to 7.45 µg L-1 during the pre-monsoon season, with a mean value of 2.31 µg L-1, and from 0.79 to 8.05 µg L-1 during the post-monsoon season, with a mean value of 2.53 µg L-1. These concentrations are compared to the AERB and WHO recommended levels of 60 and 30 micrograms per liter, respectively. The results of the study revealed that the waters are safe to consume and use in the home. The cancer risk for mortality and morbidity was estimated, and the mean values were 7.65 x 10-11 and 1.18 x 10-10, respectively. Chemical toxicity risk, also known as Lifetime Average Daily Dose (LADD), was measured and found to range from 0.05 to 0.47 µg Kg-1 Day-1, with a mean value of 0.15 µg Kg-1 Day-1 The annual effective dose resulting to ingestion was observed to range between 1.33 -13.3 µSv Y-1 with a mean value of 4.3 µSv Y-1.
