Utilization of bulk quantiites of natural soil is a viable technique in pavement constructions. Natural Subgrade supports the pavement loads and hence should have adequate strength. Due to the limitation as these natural soils posses low strength due to their degree of compactness, type and minreals present, seldom, construction costs increase either for increasing thickness of pavement or for improving this weak subgrade. Providing stronger layer above soft layer and reinforcing weaker soils using geo-synthetics like geo-grids are few techniques to improve subgrade performance.
Geosynthetics are synthetic materials manufactured and available in different types. The choice of geosynthetic depends to suit a function/ purpose and to some extent up on the properties of subgrade. Among all geosynthetic types’ geotextiles, geogrids etc. offer their applications in the areas of functioning namely separation and reinforcement.
Present project work aims to study the influence of stronger aggregate layer over soft soil subgrade with and without reinforcement at the interface over CBR property of different subgrade. Four subgrade types with varying plasticity properties are use for present study. The soil subgrade is collected from different locations surrounding Rajam. Coarse aggregate are considered for preparation of overlying layer above soft subgrade. Laboratory and field CBR tests are conducted with varying Hr (Ha / Hs) from 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 0.5. Where Hs and Ha are thickness of subgrade and thickness of overlying aggregate respectively. Effect of separator reinforcement (geosynthetic) is also studied on CBR for various Hr.
The results showed that the influence of plasticity, thickness of overlying stiff layer and reinforcement is considerable on CBR value. CBR is found to increase with Hr and decrease with plasticity and percentage of fines. The effect of reinforcement is good and hence is a considerable improvement in CBR. The CBR value has considerably increased when the tests were conducted on the field location.
