Abstract: A total of 104 plant species including 61 trees and 43 lianas belonging to 86 genera and 44 families were investigated in twelve sites. All trees girth ≥ 10 cm girth at breast height and all lianas ≥ 1 cm diameter, measured at 1.3 m from the rooting point were enumerated. A total of 8700 woody species abundances were found in the twelve sites (7121 trees and 1579 lianas). 61 % of trees contribute more to woody species richness than 39 % of lianas. The total basal area for trees was 221.7 m2 ha-1 and ranged from 12.19 m2 ha-1 to 38.42 m2 ha-1. The total basal area for lianas was 5.4 m2 ha-1 and ranged from 0.01 m2 ha-1 to 2.56 m2 ha-1. For woody species (trees and lianas) across twelve sites, Above Ground Biomass was found to be 1319.07 Mg ha-1, Below Ground Biomass was 342.96 Mg ha-1 and carbon stock totalled to 831.01 Mg C ha-1. Maximum carbon stock was observed at Visalur (169.05 Mg C ha-1) and minimum carbon stock was observed at V. Palayam (45.40 Mg C ha-1). Trees accounted for a maximum of share of 98 % and lianas contributed only 2 % to the total of woody plants carbon stocks in the study sites. The extent of woody species diversity and estimated carbon stock of twelve sacred groves, underline the need for biological conservation of sacred forests which are fast vanishing due to anthropogenic pressures.
