This study examines how Nityananda Janavani 91.2FM, a community radio station in Purulia addresses stigma and taboos prevailing in an essentially patriarchal Santal society. A qualitative case study based approach is adopted which includes on- field observations, content analysis and a series of interviews with the representatives of the radio channel and the local Santali people. Attempts are made to understand the impact of the programmes of Nityananda Janavani along with the perception of local Santali people on these programmes. Also, this study attempts to understand the strategies adapted by the community radio station to reach out to the marginalised conservative Santali villages and challenge the deep- rooted socio- cultural beliefs on menstrual health and hygiene.
