Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore is a landmark text in Indian literature that explores the emotional, social, and psychological realities of women in colonial Bengal. Among its many memorable characters, Binodini emerges as one of the earliest representations of the “New Woman” in Bengali fiction. She is educated, emotionally aware, intellectually independent, and unwilling to remain confined within the rigid expectations imposed upon widows. Through Binodini, Tagore challenges patriarchal traditions and exposes the emotional isolation experienced by women in nineteenth-century Bengali society. This paper examines Binodini’s character through the lens of feminism, identity, widowhood, and female agency. It argues that Binodini represents a transition from the traditional submissive woman to a modern female consciousness that seeks individuality, dignity, and emotional fulfilment. The paper also highlights Tagore’s humanistic approach in portraying Binodini not as a flawless heroine, but as a deeply complex and realistic woman shaped by loneliness, desire, pride, and social rejection.
