Online examinations are widely used today, but preventing cheating remains a major challenge.
Most existing online exam systems rely on basic webcam monitoring such as face detection and
simple rule-based checks, which often produce false cheating alerts and fail to provide clear
explanations for their decisions. Additionally, many systems do not effectively monitor browser
misuse or adequately protect student privacy. To address these limitations, this project proposes a
Smart Online Examination System with AI Proctoring. Unlike traditional approaches that focus
on single events, the system continuously monitors student behavior and calculates a cheating risk
score based on repeated actions such as looking away, face absence, and tab switching. It employs
multi-factor monitoring by combining webcam analysis with real-time browser and screen activity
tracking, while object detection is used to identify unauthorized items such as mobile phones. An
Explainable AI approach is integrated to clearly communicate the reasons behind suspicious
activity flags. Important examination events are securely recorded using tamper-proof logging
techniques, and a privacy-aware framework ensures sensitive data is processed locally. Overall, the
proposed system delivers a more accurate, secure, transparent, and privacy-conscious solution for
online examinations.
