Abstract: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder that affects 5-20% of women of reproductive age, marked by hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology. The prevalence of PCOS in India remains understudied. Contributing factors include genetic predisposition, lifestyle, environmental toxins (e.g., pesticides, vehicle exhaust, cosmetics), insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and poor diet. Key hormonal features of PCOS include an increased FSH:LH ratio, elevated testosterone, and decreased SHBG. Insulin resistance is common, leading to elevated insulin levels. Clinical features include hirsutism, acne, and irregular periods, while reproductive challenges may involve sub-fertility. Metabolic issues, such as a higher risk of metabolic disorders, are also prevalent. Traditional treatments include herbs like Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Glycyrrhiza glabra, and Nigella sativa, while modern treatments feature Clomiphene citrate and Metformin. Agents like Thiazolidinediones and Inositols help manage insulin resistance, improving PCOS outcomes. Environmental factors, gut dysbiosis, and lifestyle also play significant roles in the condition.
Keywords: PCOS, hyperandrogenic disorder, Chronic anovulation, Genetic predisposition, Traditional treatment, Modern allopathy treatment.
