Abstract: Beauty is the attractive appeal of a person while beauty standards are the ideals and perceptions of beauty that society and culture place on people. Modern beauty standards are defined by ideal traits like body shape, height, weight, facial features, skin tones, clothing style and hairstyle. Level of perception regarding these modern beauty standards is what impact the self-esteem of a person and is highly influenced by western culture, societal standard, media portrayal, cultural norms and personal experience. Although today's beauty standards are embracing diversity and natural beauty, moving away from conventional ideals of perfection. A descriptive study was conducted on 150 students of selected colleges of Amritsar, Punjab to identify the level of perception through convenient sampling techniques. A standard Board Conceptualization of Beauty Scale (BCBS) was used to elicit the detailed information related to study objective. The result of the study showed that majority 112(74%) of study participants had good level of perception followed by very few 39(26%) had average level of perception while no one had poor level of perception regarding modern beauty standards. There was significant association between level of perception regarding modern beauty standards with age, gender and family type while non-significant with religion, education, pocket money, place of living, type of diet, media form and physical appearance comparison.
