| Abstract: | Kigelia africana commonly known as sausage tree belongs to Bignoniaceae family. It is distributed in tropical and subtropical and few temperate regions. The family recognized as woody lianas, shrubs or trees. The local name of sausage tree are balam khira, jharfanoos, kijili, nagamalle etc. which bloom at night on long ropelike fibrous stalk hangs deep red flowers and are pollinated by bats and sunbirds in their native habitat. The large flowers turns into massive fruits appears peculiar sausage- shaped hanging and weigh up to 6.8 kg. It is mainly grown for decorative purposes for its beautiful flowers and its strange fruits. In capital of Jharkhand, it can be witness on several places like on roadside of Old Purulia, Ashoknagar, Doranda, Morabadi, Kanke etc. The fruits are traditionally used for skin afflictions, treatment of intestinal worms and in making shampoos and facial creams. The bioactive secondary metabolites have diverse pharmacological significance can be drawn to commercial utility and its production. The present paper introduces and reviews its overall biological and non biological attributes from different library resources. |
