Abstract: The gender wage gap in India is a persistent issue that has significant implications for women's economic empowerment and overall well-being. Despite some progress in reducing the gap, Indian women still earn significantly less than their male counterparts. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the trends, causes, consequences and policy responses to the gender wage gap in India. Using data from various sources, including the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), this article examines the extent of the gender wage gap in India and its variations across different sectors and industries. The article also analyzes the causes of the gap, including discrimination, occupational segregation, and the undervaluation of women's work, besides discussing the consequences of the gap. Furthermore, this article examines the policy responses to the gender wage gap in India, including the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976, the Code on Wages in 2019, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The article assesses the effectiveness of these policies in reducing the gender wage gap and provides recommendations for future policy interventions. Overall, this article provides a comprehensive analysis of the gender wage gap in India and highlights the need for sustained policy efforts to address this issue. The findings of this article have significant implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners working to promote women's economic empowerment and reduce gender-based inequalities in India.
