Background
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, affecting the skin, peripheral nerves, and other tissues. Despite advances in treatment, leprosy remains a public health challenge in endemic areas. The WHO-recommended Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) has significantly reduced the disease burden, but associated side effects and treatment outcomes require further evaluation.
Objective
This study aims to assess the side effects, outcomes, and demographic factors influencing the treatment of leprosy patients undergoing WHO MDT at CGMCH, Chidambaram.
Method
A prospective study was conducted over six months on 50 leprosy patients receiving MDT. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and patient records, including demographics, treatment duration, types of leprosy, and side effects. Statistical analysis was performed to compare pre- and post-training knowledge and attitudes toward leprosy.
Result
The study population comprised 62% males and 38% females, predominantly aged 31-50 years (38%). Multibacillary leprosy was observed in 62% of patients. Significant improvements were noted in patients’ knowledge and attitudes post-training (p < 0.05). The most common treatment outcomes were improvement in skin lesions and sensation (56%) and unchanged lesions with anesthesia (22%). Side effects included neuropathic pain (10%), type I reaction (8%), and type II reaction (6%), while 62% of patients reported no side effects. Our study concluded that there was decrease in the infection and mortality rate after the administration of prophylactic antibiotics in debridement surgery for burn patients but improvements were needed to use prophylactic antibiotics more precisely regarding quantity and choice of the type of antibiotics.
