| Abstract: | This paper examines the opportunities and threats presented by the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to the rural labour market in India. MGNREGA has significantly transformed the landscape of rural employment by guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment to every rural household, thereby alleviating poverty and enhancing income security. This study highlights key opportunities, including employment generation, women's empowerment, skill development, and infrastructure improvement, which collectively contribute to rural economic growth. However, it also identifies critical threats such as dependency on government schemes, inefficiencies in implementation, limited work availability, and persistent gender disparities. Through an analysis of existing literature and case studies, the paper underscores the need for effective policy interventions to maximize the benefits of MGNREGA while addressing its inherent challenges. Ultimately, the findings aim to inform policymakers and stakeholders about enhancing the program's impact on the rural labour market and fostering sustainable rural development. |
