Xanthium strumarium L., a member of the Compositae family, is a widely distributed medicinal plant found in North America, Brazil, China, Malaysia, and hot regions of India. Traditionally, it has been utilized to treat various ailments including leucoderma, insect bites, epilepsy, malaria, rheumatism, tuberculosis, and more. Comprehensive studies have outlined its botanical characteristics and reviewed its phytochemical components and pharmacological effects, which include antibacterial, antitumour, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, among others. These effects are attributed to constituents like sesquiterpene lactones and phenols. Future research should focus on rigorous in vitro and in vivo studies, alongside clinical trials, to validate the plant’s traditional medicinal uses and identify individual active constituents.
for X. strumarium. This paper reviews the progress of modern research on the traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Xanthium strumarium L., and its applications in treating various diseases. X. strumarium has been used for thousands of years in China, and its traditional usages, botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology have been extensively studied. Over 170 chemical constituents have been identified from X. strumarium, including sesquiterpenoids, phenylpropenoids, lignanoids, coumarins, steroids, glycosides, flavonoids, thiazides, anthraquinones, and naphthoquinones. Modern research shows that extracts and compounds from X. strumarium have a wide range of pharmacological effects, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiidiabetic, antilipidemic, and antiviral effects. However, further research should focus on investigating bioactive compounds, demonstrating detoxification mechanisms, and establishing reasonable quality control standards
