| Abstract: | The 1980s saw the emergence of Wahhabism in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), which is a noteworthy period in the turbulent history of the area. During this time, a strict and puritanical interpretation of Islam emerged, changing the religious landscape and escalating already-existing conflicts between the Muslim and Hindu communities. This paper examines the sociopolitical background of Jammu and Kashmir, the doctrinal impacts of Wahhabism, and the larger geopolitical dynamics of South Asia in the late 20th century which are necessary to comprehend the emergence of Wahhabism in J&K. |
