This article examines the establishment of King George Medical College (KGMC) in Lucknow, highlighting its role as a significant development in the medical aspect of the United Provinces. Before KGMC's formation, the region was significantly underserved in medical education, relying on distant institutions in Calcutta and Lahore. Despite existing medical facilities like the Agra Medical School, Kings Unani School, and Balrampur Hospital, these were inadequate for the needs of a population exceeding 40 million.
The article details the continuous efforts, starting from 1870, to establish a medical college in the region. The critical turning point came with the proposed visit of the Prince of Wales in 1905, which excited everyone. Maharaja Sir Pratap Narayan Singh, along with other prominent figures, championed the cause, leading to substantial public and royal endorsement.
KGMC was officially established through a combination of public donations and government support, culminating in the laying of the foundation stone by the Prince of Wales on December 26, 1905. The college and hospital were designed to provide modern medical education and services to the region. The article underscores the significant role of the Taluqdars of Awadh in both the fundraising and the promotion of the medical college, reflecting a strong local initiative and contribution.
Overall, KGMC's creation marked a significant advancement in medical education and healthcare accessibility in Northern India, aiming to integrate Western medical practices with local needs and knowledge.
