Abstract: The United Nations' ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been criticized for their inconsistencies and difficulties in quantifying, implementing and monitoring. Negative analyzes suggest potential misalignment's between the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly socioeconomic development and environmental sustainability goals. These criticisms also raise questions about the measurability and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals more generally. Goals are not binding, each country is expected to develop its own national or regional plan. Furthermore, the sources and amounts of financial resources and investments for the Sustainable Development Goals are debatable. This chapter quantifies and explores tensions related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it tests which of the main social, economic and environmental pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals are most effective in achieving sustainable development. Data analysis shows that developed countries need to continue to focus on social and environmental policies. Developing countries, on the other hand, are interested in focusing on economic and social policies in the short term, even though environmental policies remain important for sustainable development.
