Purpose: The main challenges in using plant extracts to create contemporary medicine were their insufficient potency, solubility, permeability, and stability. Researchers in the pharmaceutical sector have previously expressed a strong interest in creating effective medication delivery methods. One such innovative method is the phytosome, which makes polyphenolic phytoconstituents more skin permeable and absorbable from the digestive tract.
Methods: The interaction of natural or synthesised phospholipid with phytoconstituents occurs throughout various production methods. Data from online platforms were gathered. All of the articles that were selected for the review were screened. The study then provided an overview of the data found in the studies that had already been published on phytosomes, a cutting-edge technique for the delivery of herbal drugs.
Results: Phosphatidylcholine is bound to various components of standardised herbal extracts in phytosomes. The bioavailability and penetration of herbal extracts are improved. Antioxidants, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-obesity polyphenolic substances have a wide range of medicinal applications.
Conclusion: Phytosomes have substantial medicinal and health-improving qualities. Phytosome accomplishments, manufacturing considerations, characterisation, and current trends are all discussed in this article.
