This study explores the effects of water-emulsified diesel fuel on the performance of a single-cylinder, water-cooled diesel engine. Diesel engines are renowned for their high energy conversion efficiency and are increasingly utilized in both heavy-duty machineries. Water-emulsified diesel fuel, created through the mixing of diesel, distilled water, and a surfactant, offers potential benefits such as improved combustion efficiency and reduced emissions.
The experimental setup involves the meticulous preparation of emulsions with varying water concentrations using a mechanical agitator. Engine performance parameters, including brake power, brake specific fuel consumption, and brake thermal efficiency, are meticulously measured at different loads using an eddy current dynamometer and other instrumentation.
Results indicate notable decreases in specific fuel consumption by 2% to 4% with water concentrations up to 7% at lower loads, accompanied by enhancements in brake thermal efficiency. However, higher water content or loads result in decreased efficiency. Additionally, emissions of NOx, SOx, and CO witness reductions with the adoption of water-emulsified diesel fuel.
This study underscores the potential of water-emulsified diesel fuel to enhance engine performance and mitigate environmental impact. Optimal results are achieved with emulsions containing 5% to 7% water and 0.5% to 1% surfactants, presenting a promising avenue for future research into alternative fuel options for diesel engines.
