The garment and textile industries have undergone several fascinating developments over the past 20 years. Various textile finishing techniques are described in this overview. Advanced textile finishing techniques may include functionalization using nano-coatings, surface modification using hydrolysable silanes, enzymes, microencapsulation and the strengthening of synthetic fibres with nano-coatings and nano-clays, to name a few. Conventional methods of finishing, such as wet and dry finishing techniques, are still used on cotton and woollen fabrics. These techniques impart various textures and performance qualities onto the textile materials, transforming them into textiles for the future. Without these techniques, "futuristic" textiles, such as apparel and garments as well as technical textiles that respond well to changes in the environment and the human body, would not be possible.
