AIM:
● To assess and evaluate the different types of neurotransmitters affected in different types of
depression.
● To study the management and supportive therapy of depression.
● Compare and analyse cost and effectiveness of antidepressant drugs.
METHODS:
This is a retrospective and prospective study and was conducted over a period of 6 months at
Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Bangalore. in which 60 patients case note was studied. The patients
who meet the criteria will be enrolled for the study. Baseline information such as demographic
details like age, sex, date of first counselling of the patients will be obtained. Any patient’s aged
(65yrs) and above will be excluded from my study, and patient’s aged (64yrs) and below will
be evaluated.
RESULTS:
The study was conducted over 60 patients in which the study patients constituted of 41.7% male
and 58.3% female affected by the depression. The age group 30-40yrs has the highest
percentage (33.3%), followed by 20-30yrs categories with (31.7%). The categories 40-50yrs
and 50-60yrs has (16.7%) and (13.3%) respectively. The least percentage (5%) are patients aged
group 10-20yrs. And the most used antidepressants drugs observed are TAB.
ESCITALOPRAM (19.6%), TAB. CLONAZEPAM (14.5%), TAB. SERTRALINE (13.8%),
TAB. TRIHEXYPHENIDYL (10.9%), TAB. RISPERIDONE (10.1%) and TAB.
LORAZEPAM (8.7%). Other drugs used consist (22.4%).
CONCLUSION:
This study suggests that female patients suffering from depression are found more (58.3%) than
male (41.7%), and during the study we observed that patient suffer with psychotic depression
are more (36.7%) than any other types. Common neurotransmitters affected are: dopamine,
serotonin, norepinephrine and acetylcholine. In conclusion depression is common to have, and
can be manageable within an early stage, failure to treat it in early stage can cause mental
disorder or even death.
