Abstract: As a pathologically heterogeneous disease, cancer is one of the leading causes of global morbidity. According to the World Health Organization, approximately one in six deaths are caused by cancer. The benefits of conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation therapy. But they have several drawbacks, including cytotoxicity, inaccurate targeting of tumor cells, and multi-drug resistance. Recently, the advancement of nanotechnology has opened new horizons for cancer treatments. Effective and safe delivery of anticancer agents is among the major challenges in cancer therapy. The majority of anticancer agents are toxic to normal cells. Recent advancements in nanotechnology provide safe and efficient drug delivery systems for successful delivery of anticancer agents via nanoparticles. The physicochemical and functional properties of the nanoparticle vary for each of these anticancer agents, including chemotherapeutics, nucleic acid-based therapeutics, small molecule inhibitors. The characteristics of the anticancer agents influence the design and development of nanoparticle carriers. This review focuses on strategies of nanoparticle-based drug delivery for cancer therapy.
Keywords: Anticancer agent, global morbidity, cancer therapy, bioavailability, nanotechnology, nanoparticles.
