| Abstract: | Sea has always been used as a powerful metaphor in works of art from times immemorial, but it is only recently that it evolved as a subject to academic scrutiny. A shift in attention from land to sea has made a vast trove of writing, painting and music that awaits analysis under the rubric of what English professor Steve Mentz would like to call the ‘Blue Humanities’. This paper tries to analyse the emergence of blue humanities as a new area of literary genre which has received much little scholarly attention. Blue Humanities historicises the ocean and makes it an important part of contemporary consciousness which will helpfully encourage more research and to reverse the multi-dimensional negative effects of neglecting to care for the ocean, which roughly holds the two-thirds of our planet. It explores the many ways humans engage with water, utilising literary, cultural, historical and theoretical connections to the story and the theory of water centric thinking. |
