Abstract: Metabolomics is an emerging field and is broadly defined as the comprehensive measurement of all metabolites and low-molecular-weight molecules in a biological specimen. It is the technology of high screening and investigation of epigenomes, genomes, proteomes, transcriptomes and metabolomes in an unbiased manner. Historically, small numbers of metabolites have been used to diagnose complex metabolic diseases as well as monogenic disorders such as inborn errors of metabolism. According to the central dogma of life, the information flows from DNA to RNA and to proteins with an increasing level of complexity. OMICS technology helps to untangle these complexities at all levels. Current metabolomics technologies go well beyond the scope of standard clinical chemistry techniques and are capable of precise analyses of hundreds to thousands of metabolites. Metabolomics has been continually found to accelerate the process of herbal drug search and forms the prime source of continuous progress in phytotherapeutics employed in the treatment of various diseases. Complete analysis of various phytochemicals present in herbal medicines using metabolomics techniques is imperative from the pharmaceutical and industrial perspective.
Keywords: Metabolomics, phytotherapeutics
