Background: Ashvattha is a very useful drug that is mainly used in wound and skin disorders. Its external applications are most useful in Ayurveda practices. Ashvattha is also mentioned in religious books like Bhagavad Geeta as well as in Buddhist literature.
Material and method: Ashvattha, (Ficus religiosa Linn. , Moraceae), has been well documented in Ayurveda. This paper provides collective information regarding the external therapeutic application of this plant generated through a thorough literary study of 9 Samhita (treatise), and 6 Chikitsagrantha (compendia of Ayurveda). Online available open access peer-reviewed journals research papers regarding external applications of Ficus religiosa were also reviewed to support the classical claims.
Results: In Ayurveda formulations, Ashvattha is indicated in many diseased conditions inclusive of Vrana (wounds), visarpa (erysipelas), Daha (burning sensations), shotha (inflammation), shoola (pain reliever), Sarpavisha (snake-poison), Bhagna (fracture), upadamsha (gonorrhea), etc. This study also involves pharmacological actions like wound healing, hypoglycemic activity, anti-ulcer activity, and anti-inflammatory activity claimed by contemporary researches.
Conclusion: This review may enrich biography research and may provide collective and detailed information about Ashvattha's external application as presented in Ayurvedic classical texts. As it is indicated in more than 100 diseased conditions, this reveals the wide range of its clinical use. moreover, the Ashvattha tree is found abundantly all over India. The useful parts that can be collected do not harm the tree so its clinical use can be promoted.
