Knowledge Organization (KO) has long been an essential component of library and information
science education. As a result, early courses in the subject field focused on cataloguing, subject
analysis, classification, and resource description in-depth, whereas rising trends in Knowledge
Organization now include courses in metadata development and electronic resource organization.
Through the unseen colleges of scholarly communication networks, newer courses in Knowledge
Organization intersect with growing research topics in natural language processing, the semantic web,
and social networking. To better educate tomorrow's library and information professionals, several of
these courses go beyond resource descriptions while preserving links to resource descriptions through
subject analysis and metadata generation.
