Despite considerable improvement in health and well-being since independence, the nutritional deficiency disorders mainly the malnutrition remains a silent emergency in the country. The incidence rate in some parts of the country is quite high, mainly owing to inadequate food intake, illness, and harmful child rearing practices. The study was conducted in tribal and non-tribal pockets of Himachal Pradesh, with an objective to find out the impact of socio-economic factors on the nutritional profile of children. The children were the target group of the study and those under 12 years of age were considered for the purpose. 300 households, including 100 from the tribal districts and 170 from the non-tribal using formed the universe of the study. Random sampling technique was followed for selecting the sample. Thirty households were taken from high income group in urban provinces to represent the control group. Tribal children of age group 0-12 years were selected from districts Kinnaur and Chamba and non-tribal children were selected from districts Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Chamba. The study concluded that the prevalence of PEM (protein-energy malnutrition) is higher among males in comparison to females in both non-tribal and tribal areas. Prevalence of Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is highest among the children belonging to the age group 7 to 9 years of age. The results indicate that variance in nutritional status among non-tribal students is explained by age of child and condition of house. The results are significant at 1 percent level for age and at 5 percent level for condition of house. Prevalence of anemia is higher in age group 7-9 years in both males (58.3 percent) and females (55.4 percent). The results are significant for nutritional status alone at 5 percent level of significance. The positive coefficient shows that being non-anemic has a positive relationship with nutritional status. The results are significant for age and working status of mother showing that the variance in anemic status is explained to some extent by these two variables.
