The purpose of the study is to evaluate the Dalit situation, concerns, and awareness in post-independence India. It highlights how renowned novelist Joseph Macwan juxtaposes Dalit and Elite, anguish and delight, fear and courage, defeat and triumph, just and unjust existing in two small villages located in Gujarat. Because of its realistic description and the author's first-hand experience, Angaliyat has occupied an eminent place in the arena of Gujarati literature. Elite sovereignty aided by traditional taboos, beliefs and power has eroded the socio-cultural-economic fabric and jeopardized the lives of the poor untouchable. The novel resonates that no matter how so ever physically persecuted the Dalit are, their spirit remains indomitable.
