Abstract: Abstract - “Thin Stone Matrix Asphalt is a tough, stable and rut resistant gap graded bituminous mix which contains high coarse aggregates, high bitumen, filler and stabilising additive". TSMA is a coarse aggregate skeleton with stone-on-stone contact which resists shear force created by the loads applied and results in high resistance to deformation. The utilization of TSMA mix has been an attractive alternative for the highways because of their possible utilization as preventive maintenance treatment on urban roads to restrict thickness of the pavement and save aggregates usage. For the present study, an attempt has been made to study the engineering properties of the TSMA mix with VG-30 grade bitumen. The study is mainly focused on the effect of the mix with the addition of Arbocel fibre. The Marshall specimens were prepared for both conventional and with the addition of fibre (0.3%, 0.35% and 0.4%) with varying bitumen content of 5.8%, 6%, 6.2%, 6.4% and 6.6% by weight of the aggregates, to determine the Optimum Bitumen Content (OBC) and Optimum Fibre Content (OFC). Drain down potential test was also conducted on the both the mixes. It was observed that 0.3% addition of fibre proves an improved engineering properties of the TSMA mix when compared to the conventional mix. Since, the TSMA mix has better rut resist, durable and can be effectively used as wearing course for the Indian roads.
