Context: Pilea microphylla (Urticaceae) is used in Grenadines, in island country, by traditional medicine practitioners to treat diarrhea. However, no scientific data are available to justify the traditional potentials of the plant species in gastrointestinal disorders.
Objective: To evaluate the in vitro antidiarrheal activity of extracts of plant of pilea microphylla.
Materials and methods: In vitro antidiarrheal activity of hydro alcoholic extracts of pilea microphylla was evaluated against Escherichia coli by agar well diffusion method
Results: The hydro alcoholic extracts exhibited significant in vitro antidiarrheal activity compared to the standard drug Ciprofloxacin (10 µg/mL)
Discussion and conclusion: The results showed that the extracts of pilea microphylla have significant antidiarrheal activity which supports its use in traditional herbal medicinal practice.
