| Abstract: | One of the biggest fairs in West Bengal centered around Urs is held in Patharchapuri village of Birbhum district. Patharchapuri is a small village nine kilometers from Siuri, the district headquarters of Birbhum. About one hundred and thirty years ago, the great Mahatma Wali Data Mehboob Shah passed away in this village. There is a shrine of Data Saheb here. Data Saheb was a great dervish. Data Saheb's fame is not limited to Birbhum alone—it has spread to other districts of West Bengal. In 1892, he passed away in the evening of 10 Chaitra 1298 according to Bengali calendar. 26 years after the death of Data Baba i.e. in 1918, Urs festival was started on the occasion of his death anniversary. As a result, the importance of the fair increased and the number of fair days increased. It has an economic importance which is particularly evident in the public life of the wider area around the fair. . Local residents benefit the most from the fair. Different classes of people irrespective of caste-religion participate in the fair. |
