Abstract
Background of the study: Lifestyle plays an important role in the development of obesity during childhood and adolescence. Scientific evidence is increasing about the dietary factors associated with this relationship, specifically a low meal frequency, skipping breakfast, and a high consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. There is little information about dietary patterns and current time trends in adolescents. The aim of the study was to assess the eating habits of adolescents studying in different schools of Kurali. Methodology; the research design adopted for the study was descriptive design. A non-experimental approach was adopted for the present study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the 500 samples of adolescents (13-16 years). The tools used for the study was 24 hour dietary recall, semi-structured interview schedule and Likert scale to assess the eating habits of the adolescents. The data collection was done through interview method, and analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The significant level was stated at 0.05 level of degree of freedom. Results revealed that the mean knowledge score was 41.42% and the mean of eating habits was 48.70%. The association was analyzed by using one-way ANOVA and‘t’ test and the significant value was found only for religion of eating habits which was .032*. Therefore it was found to be statistically significant at 0.05 level of degree of freedom. The correlation was found by using one-way ANOVA and‘t’ test and the value was found significant. The value was 0.336*. Therefore it was found significant as the value was between -1 to +1. Conclusion: Hence the study concluded that the adolescents were having adequate eating habits and knowledge was also found adequate among the adolescents regarding the eating habits. Therefore the association is significant only with the religion related to eating habits so hypothesis is accepted for it but for rest of demographic variables it’s rejected.
