Abstract: Development begins the day of fertilization, when one sperm penetrates the ovum (egg) and unites with it to form one cell. The process of inauguration and development of an embryo from zygote (zygotic embryogenesis) or a physical cell (physical embryogenesis). It's also known as period of organogenesis. Gestations live for 9 weeks which is divided into three trimesters. Gestation and lactation are a unique clinical situation where medicine treatment presents a special concern because all the medicines taken by the lady have an eventuality to produce dangerous goods in the growing fetus or lactating baby. Treatment of common illnesses in early pregnancy is complicated because of the risk of teratogenic effects of drugs on the fetus. The period of greatest risk is between the first and eighth week of pregnancy. Nearly 3.3 million children under five years of age die globally every year due to birth defects. An acknowledgment of the tragedies caused by the thalidomide epidemic in the 1970s and the rubella epidemic in the early 1960s in the field of teratology. Chloramphenicol, Warfarin, Valproate, and Thalidomide are a few of the medications that might cause abnormalities such microcephaly, hydrocephalus, spina bifida, and a number of other syndromes. Teratogenesis is process of induction of malformations or birth defect in fetus or embryo. Medicinal drugs such as thalidomide, retinoic acid; recreational drug such as alcohol and cocaine; environmental toxins such as heavy metals like cadmium; environmental pollutant include pesticides. Herpes, HIV, Rubella and Zika virus. Hyperthermia, Smoking, Maternal condition pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. The purpose of this article is to provide an up-to-date source of information about medication use in pregnancy, to review the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pregnancy and lactation categories, and to further describe FDA changes in drug labeling.
