Paper Title: A Comparative Study on Stabilized Black Cotton Soil Using RHA and Cement and its Applications in Pavement Design

Abstract: Black cotton soil is highly sensitive to the seasonal variation which causes distress to the structures that are built over it .civil engineering infrastructures especially pavement suffer from premature failure. Stabilizing black cotton soil with chemical, cement, industrial waste, geo- textiles, fibre etc have found to be effective in improving the strength of the black cotton soil. In the present study an attempt is made to study the combined effect of Rice Husk Ash and cement with black cotton soil. In present work, experiment were conducted on Black cotton soil by varying % of Rice Husk Ash from 5 % to 20 % and keeping 5% of cement as constant, compaction and strength characteristics are tested. Due to the addition of Rice Husk Ash in combination with cement there is a predominant increase in the strength of black cotton soil. It is observed that the CBR value of black cotton soil has been increased from 13.31% to 23.29% for unsoaked condition. Similarly, the CBR value is increased even in the case of soaking for 4 days and 7 days from 24.13% to 25.38% i.e, no marginal change has been observed. Overall, it can be concluded that Rice Husk Ash reinforced soil in combination with cement can be considered as good stabilization technique specially in areas with black cotton soil for the construction of pavements.
